Speech Therapy at Pediatrics Plus
Speech therapy can be an integral part of a child’s development whether it be for speech-sound production, language acquisition, cognition, or feeding and oral motor skills. These are some of the main areas treated in speech therapy here at Pediatrics Plus.
Pediatrics Plus strives to surround patients and employees with our seven core values. These values are:
- Compassion
- Communication
- Excellence
- Faith
- Integrity
- Respect
- Family
As a speech therapist, these core values are incorporated into treatment consistently. For example, compassion, communication, and family tie together when creating a specialized treatment plan for each child. Supporting families with compassion and communication makes for more effective therapy and carryover with understanding and comfort. As a company, we strive for excellence while ensuring each child and family is respected and provided appropriate, ethical therapy services.
Developing treatment plans after an evaluation is one of the first steps to take in the therapy journey. With speech therapy, it will be determined which areas need to be targeted to best serve the child. Including the family in the planning process is essential to the child’s success in therapy. When writing the treatment plan, the therapist will focus on the skills the child needs to improve upon to increase their communication, feeding, and/or oral motor skills to acheive the next developmentally appropriate level. Communication with parents and caregivers is key to the child's success in therapy and carryover of these skills at home.
Communication is Key to Speech Therapy
Collaboration between all members of your child’s team comes together to create the best treatment plan possible for the child. This communication ensures appropriate functional goals that will benefit each child that may be integrated into all areas of your child’s day at Pediatrics Plus. Functional goals are written for each child on an individualized basis to improve their skills where they use them the most. For example, if a child is targeting social skills, we prefer to target their skill development during game play with a peer to observe carryover of that targeted skill in a controlled setting with the therapist.
Play-based therapy is a key component of the child's development and habilitation of speech and language skills. The facilities at Pediatrics Plus encourage play based and functional treatment in a variety of environments throughout the building. Pediatrics Plus utilizes classrooms, the functional play gym, feeding labs, sensory gyms, playgrounds, private treatment rooms, and a library to encourage functional and pretend play scenarios within therapy. Putting these facilities to good use makes for novel and beneficial therapy sessions for each child, promoting generalization of skills across environments.
