Milestone Moments: Speech Tips for 0-3 Months
This month we are focusing on every perspective surrounding the milestones of a baby in the first three months of life. Last week, we listed out PT tips for ways to get your baby moving (PT Tips: 0-3 Month Milestones).
If you want to know all of the developmental milestones for a newborn, visit Milestone Moments: 0-3 Months. Below are tips to engage your baby from the perspective of a speech therapist!
- Your baby should respond to sounds and voices in the environment. Rule-out hearing difficulties especially when ear infections occur frequently.
- Engage in playful face-to-face interactions through eye contact, singing songs, imitation of facial expressions, and imitation of sounds.
- Respond to different cries and sounds made by your baby. Hold, rock, and soothe your baby to allow time for attachment and bonding.
- Read books to your baby regularly. It's never too early to introduce your baby to books!
- Establish familiar routines for feeding, naps, bathing, and bed time. Use simple language to talk to your baby during these routines.
- Engage with your baby during everyday activities including tummy time, diaper changes, car rides, etc. Talk to your baby about what you are doing, objects in the environment, and familiar people.
- Play simple games of peek-a-boo and pat-a-cake. Use rattles and other infant toys during play with your baby.
